a giveaway

The light is falling here. Johnny just left to hang out with a drummer friend which means he could be gone for hours. I might be in bed when he arrives home. However, uninterrupted quiet time will be nice because I'm near the end of Andrew Peterson's book. Boy, it is good. Sometime after a much-needed haircut tomorrow, or after Church on Friday afternoon, I will finally post a lil' review - my thoughts on this lovely novel.

In the meantime, I'm giving you the heads up. I've been hinting at a giveaway, so here's the loot:
-I happen to have an extra copy of On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness by A. Peterson.
-Three postcards by the talented mav of port2port ~ that sheep, a guest room, and oranges.
-A letterpress card, also by mav.
-A tea bag medley.

I figured you should drink tea while reading, and the cards are just extra inspiration along with Andrew Peterson's beautiful writing.

* The details? Leave a comment on this post, on my upcoming book review post, and/or send me an e-mail:

jennisimmons at gmail dot com

Tell me your favorite Andrew Peterson song, your favorite childhood book, your favorite kinds of tea, and what inspires you lately. You may leave one comment on both posts and send one e-mail for both posts. That's four opportunities to participate in this little contest. On Sunday, I'll draw a name out of an Easter basket. Actually, just a basket
. I will mail the goodies to one of you next week!

Oooo, I really want to win. I can't exactly answer all the questions, though, but I'll do my best...

Favorite Andrew Peterson song? That one I can't answer because I haven't really listened to him before. But if I win the book, I promise I will listen thoroughly and carefully to the CD of his that we have.

Favorite childhood book? I don't think you really want to know this, but I was raised on a steady diet of Archie comic books. That's all I can remember from my childhood - Betty and Veronica and Reggie and Jughead. Yep. But when I hit junior high I discovered Anne of Green Gables, so can that count?

Favorite tea? I'm totally into the Republic of Tea now and love pretty much anything black and flavored that they do.

What inspires me lately is seeing all kinds of cool projects on blogs. It could have been a craft blog that sent me into my 2 month running sewing stint (which I think is about to wrap up now that the Easter dresses are done...).

Okay, there! Pick me!! :)

Cool!

I don't know Andrew Peterson but plan to check him out!

Favorite child book: The Velveteen Rabbit.

Favorite teas: peppermint green tea, iced peach decaf tea, yerba matte (sp).

What inspires me lately: my beautiful little girl, my husband, music, other blogs, books, nature... the bluebonnets are already blooming! Yeah!!! And, the prayers/studies in the Portals of Prayer magazine.

That's it I think. Not sure if we were supposed to enter an individual answer for each question, making four comments in total. If so, then I can redo this for you. lol.

Sorry, I haven't heard any of Andrew's songs, either, but would love to hear them. :) Will email my other comments, as it sounds like we get one shot per post or email. Correct?! :D

Ooh, ooh...I'll play :)

1. Fave AP song: tough one, but I would have to say "Nothing to Say" (partly because my name is Jamie, partly because it is awesome) or that hymn he wrote that has the line "serve him, He who brings the morning"

2. Fave childhood book: I would love to put a really classic title here, but all I can think of now are the Ramona books...I read them all!

3. fave teas: anything fruity (not a huge hot tea drinker--does that disqualify me?)

4. inspiration: getting to see the world again for the first time as Asher encounters creation, the Puritans, HGTV ;)

I'm loving these comments and e-mails - keep 'em coming!

Beckye - sorry if I didn't explain well enough, but you can comment once on both posts and e-mail once for both posts. That is four times you can "place your name in the basket." So, you've met your e-mail quota. You can comment on my book review post if you'd like.

I'm not familiar with andrew peterson, but trust your taste in music and will seek him out.

my favorite childhood book was, "love you forever". my mom read it to my sister and I every evening. I still remember, "I'll love you forever, I'll like you for always, as long as I'm living my baby you'll be."

ben and I both love loose cinnamon orange tea from our local spice merchant -- so much in fact that I'm going to be braising a chicken with this tea-infused liquid on easter sunday (we're celebrating the western easter this year, too).

I'm inspired by my witty husband, the goodness of my pals, clean lines and simplicity, the way a song makes you remember, the sea, the, seeing the world from a plane, and even the tough times.

hey! thanks for the give-away game and fun questions.

i'm like several of the other readers; i hadn't heard of andrew peterson before. i checked him out on youtube and i loved the "nothing to say" song.

my favorite childhood book was a battered blue-cloth-bound Life of Joan of Arc.

i love honeybush tea.

right now, the hirshhorn museum's "cinema effect" exhibit inspires me.

peace,

laura

Oooooh, a giveaway! I'd love to try some of the teas you talk about - you always make me crave tea when I read your blog!

I love all teas, especially chai. There was a coffee shop I used to go to that had a chaipuccino. You can imagine what that was made up of - I'm primarily a coffee drinker so that combined the best of both words for me.

My favorite childhood book was "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn". I think I liked it so much because the main character, Francie, was a voracious reader and like I was at the time. I also loved the Velveteen Rabbit (even though it makes me cry) and this little book called "A Special Change" about a little girl and her elderly neighbor. Plus, it contains one of my favorite quotes - "Don't be saddish, have a radish!" :o)

I was inspired by the 'almost warm' weather in Chicago last week. I am most decidedly UNinspired by the crazy snow that's coming down here right now. Yuck!

My favorite Andrew Peterson song is Queen of Iowa, in honor of my Iowan roots! I've been visiting your blog for a few months and recently moved to Houston so I'm excited to visit some of your favorite bookstores from previous posts.

I'd like to add my favorite book the the drawing pot. I still reread, yearly, The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster. As a kid I wished I could visit Dictionopolis and Digitopolis, meet the Wicked Which, and hang out with the other crazy characters. I'm certain Juster's love of language led me to mine... resulting in years as an English teacher!

Put my name in that hat! :)

Andrew Peterson: you are the first person to mention his name to me. I love the lyrics you posted from Canaan Bound.

Favorite book(s) from childhood: Little beat-up red-bound book of missionary stories, The Phantom Tollbooth, Heidi, The Westing Game, Anne of Green Gables, From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, and the local library. (Is that cheating?)

Favorite teas: I like tea. It's all good.

What inspires me lately: watching The Passion yesterday evening on Good Friday; watching my husband disciple our son yesterday, while standing & praying outside Planned Parenthood; the forgiveness of children; and every day my ruby hibiscus blooms anew.

Thanks, Jenni, for sharing your thoughts on On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness. The title alone tells me we've got to read it!

No, I am not entering myself in my contest. I just want to answer for fun. :)

1. It's a tough call, but three of my favorite A.P. songs are "Shiloh", "Nothing to Say", and "Canaan Bound."

2. I never can choose just ONE book, so some of my childhood favorites were/are Heidi, Nancy Drew books, Madeleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time series, and From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. I read C.S. Lewis and Tolkien later in life, but they are some of my favorites, too.

3. What tea do I not love?
I love a really good Assam (black) tea, I love rooibos (red) vanilla, a really good chai, jasmine green, a really good chamomile concoction, and well, I'll stop there.

4. Recent inspiration: my silly saint of a husband, sunshine, our funny cats, great writers (I learn from them), the blue/black Rothko postcard pinned near our kitchen sink, our bottlebrush tree blooming, cardinals flying 'round our backyard; and the music of Andrew Peterson, Daniel Lanois, Sandra McCracken, Emmylou Harris, and The Shins.

What a nice giveaway!
I don't know AP, but after all this talk, I will definitely listen!
My favorite childhood books were probably The Witch of Blackbird Pond, and A Swiftly Tilting Planet.
I only drink herbal tea, and my faves are peppermint, and Mexican Sweet Chili (yogi tea).
Inspiring me now: my new lens, books as always, temperatures in the 50s, my baby nephew learning to walk!

I have never heard Andrew Peterson but he sounds marvelous! I look forward to hunting down some of his music:)

There are too many childhood favorites so I'll just tell you the first one that popped into my head. It's Heidi and it's the clearest memory of all the books my Mom ever read to me. It was during a very complicated time in my seven year old life and I gladly disappeared into that world each night. We were building a house so we lived with my Grandparents at the time and they had made the attic our room and I loved it. The walls were slanted from floor to ceiling, there was a secret door and the vent went straight to the kitchen so we could call down to my Grandma how we wanted our eggs cooked in the morning. Anyway, we would read up there and I remember the bedspread, how the evening felt at that time in the house and the sound of my Mother's voice. The book was old and the binding was taped but I loved the cover (http://cgi.ebay.com/Heidi-by-Johanna-Spyri-Illustrated-by-Janet-Smalley_W0QQitemZ200132889875QQcmdZViewItem). I LOVED that story so much:)

I haven't drank as much tea as I normally do since coming to Germany but I've been wanting to drink more lately. Some tea loves - Jasmine Pearls, different kinds of chai, Alnatura's Gewürztee and much more. Since I'm drawing a blank I'll also tell two of the husband's favorites - Ti Kuan Yin and Yunnan. I loved that when my sister came to visit a couple weeks ago she had told me to have plenty of tea, as she is the main tea drinker in the family. So she drank tea here around the clock and had me doing the same.

Current Inspirations: * The reality that we are leaving Germany so soon - it makes me appreciate every little thing and want to soak it all up. * Jack's Rhymes - he makes up rhymes imitating everything we say, he sings them and he whispers them to himself. * Expensive phone conversations with my sister Kate - about God, morning scriptures, our children and our similar temperaments. * My husband doing things like...when my boys wouldn't go to sleep last night he got them out of bed and the three of them sat on the floor looking out of our floor-to-ceiling bedroom window at the moon - then they slept like a baby:) * The coffee and tea presentation and accouterments in the cafes here - they are all different and detailed in their own way a greatly delight me. * Reading Italy in Mind * This place I just discovered - http://mettespotteridanmark.blogspot.com/ * the vibrant colors of the hills surrounding the local castle and the color of my boys cheeks after a festival there.
