it's the little things



Yesterday was a mostly great day. We took a long walk around the neighborhood trail, worked up a good sweat, then drank tall glasses of hibiscus mint iced tea. We ran lots o' errands.... Johnny picked out the coolest (cutest to me) plaid shorts (yes, plaid), and I found a summer-y blouse that I love. I also had my eye on some Converse low-tops (in brown), but decided to think on those a week or two. I sipped plain iced coffee - good & strong. I scored a porcelain soap dish for the guest bathroom. We selected another item for my Dad's Father's Day box; I need one more. He will receive a card on time, but I'm afraid his box will arrive belated. Oh, well.

Johnny urged me to buy a stovetop espresso maker on sale. Good husband I have there. We even purchased organic Espresso Bel Canto at Whole Foods, and now our pantry smells a-ma-zing. But after we pulled out the coffee grinder this morning, cleaned it up, ground 3 cups worth of Bel Canto, and washed the stovetop contraption, lo and behold, we discovered it was missing a funnel thingy which meant no photo-op today. All is well, though - Johnny exchanged it, so perhaps I can show you how cute stovetop espresso is tomorrow.

J. and I are both dead tired due to crappy sleep, but there have been very simple, good moments today. Sometimes, it's the little things that chalk up to productivity and peace:

-I burned Autumn Leaves incense. I realize it is summer, but I love that light, autumn scent.
-Completed two thank you notes. I'm still sadly behind on snail mail, though. Please accept my apologies! It's a-comin'.
-Oh, but I did mail a package to an internet-friend. Rather, I put it together while listening to Emmylou Harris' new album, and Johnny took it to the post office.
-Recorded info. in my Moleskine address book.
-Walked around in my sock monkey slippers. Yesterday, I almost purchased a sock monkey to sit atop our living room bookshelf, but Johnny kinda mocked me though he admired other toys on that Target aisle. Maybe next time.
-Washed another batch of sugar snap peas.
-Got partially caught up on e-mail. I used to be a champion e-mailer. What happened to me?
-Made an errand list for today, for Johnny. We sure have lots of errands this week.
-Pondered what to write about next on books for calvin. Still pondering.
-Requested The Art of Simple Food from the library.
-Watched Zooey Deschanel and Jakob Dylan on Letterman - we DVR'd it. Zooey looked beautifully-vintage, but she seemed very sleepy. Jakob's song was OK, but man, he looks like his Dad.
-That reminds me, we also taped the second half of The Colbert Report (too tired to finish it last night). Colbert always makes me laugh. Did you see him interview Salman Rushdie?!
-I've got laundry in the washer.
-I'm revising the to-do-around-the-house list.
-Returned Netflix DVDs so I can have two more "me" films to watch while Johnny's out of town next week. The Science of Sleep and Paris, Je T'Aime are on the way.
-Deleted a bunch of online bookmarks and cleaned up my mixed links a bit. Good for the pysche.
-Thought about how I need to dwell in Matthew 6 for awhile. My husband quoted most of the "do not worry" passage to me last night when I was very much fretting.
-Gave the cats clean water.
-And typed this banal blog entry. It's my blog ~ I can type what I want to.

Sounds like you were busy and productive. Feels good at the end of the day, doesn't it?

Oh, and you're going to LOVE Paris, Je T'aime. It's quite lovely.

I love Matthew 6! And He follows up the 'do not worry' part with verse 33: "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." Great thing to focus on rather than the circumstance(s) we're worried about. :)

I also love the passage from Philippians 4: " 4Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

8Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things."

Taking every thought captive, and taking all our anxieties to the Lord and committing them to Him, asking Him specifically for what we need and thanking Him, then focusing our thoughts on the true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and admirable has amazing power to transform us and our days. :)

you've had quite a productive morning! I'm taking it easy. We didn't get much sleep either, due to some thunderstorming last night. I need to be catchin' up on some snail-mail as well...

Yes, loved it! Couldn't put it down. Somehow the kids cooperated and I was able to read it very quickly, but I'm hoping to read it again more slowly someday. I'll wait until you post on Books... to say more.
