hiatus

Too late last night, I skimmed an old, favorite book of mine ~ The Writing Life by Annie Dillard. My health-challenged brain needed a kick-start, to begin writing the article that's due in two weeks. I read about 15 excerpts that I could quote here, but I'll spare you. Here's one that stuck with me as I fell asleep (and is also the inspiration for one of my favorite blogs: a net for catching days...):

"I have been looking into schedules. Even when we read physics, we inquire of each least particle, What then shall I do this morning? How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives. What we do with this hour, and that one, is what we are doing. A schedule defends from chaos and whim. It is a net for catching days."

As soon as Johnny's drum studio is completed, we'll both be working from home. I'll be upstairs, and Johnny will teach and drum in the garage. And so, we both crave a good, productive daily schedule. I can't say that we've mastered it yet, but as for today, we did our very best. A proper desk is the best venue for any writing I do, so I moved my junk from the coffee table into this lovely room of mine, face-to-face with a tall bottlebrush tree. I shut the door and listened to Harley protest in the hallway. I said a few Puritan prayers. J. and I ate breakfast & lunch together at a table - not holed up behind our respective computers. We made definitive plans to walk in the early evening; catch a matinee of The Dark Knight tomorrow. He cleaned the outdoor grill; I did a load of light-colored laundry. Back upstairs, I hung a new type of inspiration wire ~ visuals to feed my article-writing:

And, I decided that I ought to focus on this article for the next two weeks and take a brief hiatus from blogging. I truly detect some improvement in my health - thank God - but I feel it's wise to devote my mental energy to reading, writing, and the upcoming deadline. I don't think such pauses in blogging will always be necessary, though. Just until I get more into the swing of a writing life again.

[not the greatest light here (or there), but the point is, I cut a Charley Harper card in half and glue-stuck it to a gray folder - to hold articles about the fascinating de Menil family. I had to get creative when Target's folder selection sucked.]
